Pope Benedict XVI agreed to "welcome" the invitation of the Government of the Dominican Republic to the Holy See to participate as a guest of honor at the international book fair to be held in Santo Domingo from 4 to 22 May, officials said Friday the Vatican.

Cardinal Gianfranco Ravasi, president of the Pontifical Council for Culture, led a meeting with journalists in which he recalled that in 2011 met 500 years of the diocese of Santo Domingo, the first in the Americas.
